Yikes! It sounds like a lot of work to watch but trust me, it’s a real pleasure. WHYY thanks our sponsors - become a WHYY sponsor The thrill extends to witnessing five agile actors, some in dual roles, as they lay out this story that happens in the past, or sometimes in the future, yet also in the present. There’s a thrill in chasing this plot - it’s always tantalizingly ahead of you - and finally nailing it. By the Hollinger’s done with his inventive, funny play, he’s provided a narrative arc. Each is also a single piece of a big puzzle with characters interacting on one level, with no idea that their lives intersect on another. Call Cousineau’s terrific design transportive in both senses of that word: It carries us through “Hope and Gravity” and enhances the play and the way we feel about it.Įach of Hollinger’s scenes functions as a little self-contained vignette. The digital ride feels as though we’re taking an elevator from floor to floor. An elevator motif runs through this production - each time one scene leads to another, Jorge Cousineau’s intricate projection design takes over the stage and also the audience’s perspective. It moves along in nine out-of-sequence scenes that begin inside an elevator where we hear the fuzzy details of an elevator accident the night before – an incident that will eventually link the scenes. Joseph’s Prep (directed by Tony Braithwaite) and, later this spring, at Drexel University.Michael Hollinger’s nifty play called “Hope and Gravity,” currently in an outstanding staging from 1812 Production, is totally out of order. Other community performances of Red Herring include past productions at Abington Friends School, St. Red Herring has been produced at over 25 theatres across the country since its premiere at the Arden nine years ago. We owe Arden Theatre Company deep thanks for presenting this play so that it was available to us – RED HERRING was a huge success! Thanks, Gwyn The production was a challenging and rewarding one that gave us, as actors, plenty of space to experiment in a way that other more traditional plays would not have. Our director saw this play and saw an opportunity for a great production that has contemporary humor and an eccentric cast of characters. This year at Penncrest High School in Media, Pennsylvania, we performed RED HERRING, a Michael Hollinger play that debuted at the Arden. One of the performers in the show shared her thoughts with us: Most recently, the students at Penncrest High School performed Red Herring, a play by Michael Hollinger that debuted at the Arden in 2000. It is also incredibly gratifying when people in our local community are inspired by a show at the Arden and go on to produce it themselves. When a show goes on to be produced at another theatre in this country (and occasionally even internationally!) it helps build the reputation of both the Arden and the playwright. Past premieres include Opus, Incorruptible, Baby Case, The Chosen, and Red Herring, among others. Plays that premiered at the Arden have gone on to be performed at more than 60 other theatres in cities such as New York, London, Chicago, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
